Глагол to crop up означает «случаться», «возникать», а также «появляться неожиданно»:

I intended to leave for St Petersburg on Monday, but something cropped up at the office and my departure was delayed. — Я намеревался поехать в Санкт-Петербург в понедельник, но возникли какие-то осложнения в офисе, и мой отъезд задержался.

Этот глагол сначала употребляли шахтёры, имея в виду слой, пласт или жилу угля, которая появляется (crops out) на поверхности. В настоящее время это слово употребляется в форме crop up (не out) только в переносном значении.
